Collection: Chinese Art

Our collection features masterworks of Chinese ceramic art, covering a historical arc from prehistoric earthenware to 19th-century kiln-fired porcelains. East Asian ceramics are among the most influential art forms in the region—uniting function, symbolism, and refined technique across centuries.

Highlights include Tang dynasty (618–907) sancai figures—vividly glazed in amber, green, and cream tones—depicting horses, polo players, and court attendants. These objects not only express the prosperity and cosmopolitanism of Tang culture, but also its funerary beliefs and artistic confidence.

From the Song dynasty (960–1279), we showcase monochrome celadon ceramics known for their jade-like glazes and subtle crackle textures, reflecting the dynasty’s refined, introspective aesthetic. Earlier periods are represented by Neolithic bowls and jars, offering a glimpse into the origins of East Asia’s ceramic traditions.

Buddhist sculptures from the Northern Qi period (6th century) further expand the collection, including votive steles and meditative bodhisattva heads—objects that embody a transcendent stillness and the spread of Mahayana Buddhism through visual form. Later pieces, such as fire-gilded bronze figures of Tara and Avalokiteshvara from the Qing dynasty, illustrate the ritual sophistication and cross-cultural resonance of Buddhist art in China.
