Glazed Cizhou ceramic bottle with so-ake decor – China, Nothern Song dynasty, early 13th century

Glazed Cizhou ceramic bottle with so-ake decor – China, Nothern Song dynasty, early 13th century

Height: 33,8 cm

High-fired stoneware, cream-coloured engobe, closely meshed crackled glaze.

The vase is significant for the technique of its decoration: simultaneous overglaze and underglaze painting using enamel-like slip, which requires two firings.

Two equestrian figures are depicted, the one in front walking briskly, the other appearing weary, accompanied by a man on foot.

This type of bottle is the forerunner of the later Mei-ping vase type.
