Yaozhou bottle vase, Cizhou type – China, Northern Song or Jin dynasty, 12th–14th century

Yaozhou bottle vase, Cizhou type – China, Northern Song or Jin dynasty, 12th–14th century

Height: 30 cm
Diameter: 15,5 cm

This tall, egg-shaped vase, unlike the traditional bottle shapes of the mei-ping types, has a wider neck with a horizontally curved lip at the mouth. This identifies it as a vase intended to hold the blossoming branch of a plum tree in spring. The frieze-structured body is decorated with carved ornaments of tendrils and peony blossoms.
