Yaka Kakungu-type mask – DR Congo, early 20th century
Yaka Kakungu-type mask – DR Congo, early 20th century
Height: 55 cm
This powerful and architecturally sculpted ceremonial mask originates from the Yaka people of the southwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo. With its dramatically high domed forehead, pronounced ballooned cheeks, strong angular nose and slightly open mouth revealing carved teeth, the mask reflects the expressive sculptural vocabulary associated with Yaka Kakungu-type ritual masks.
Carved from wood and bearing a deep, naturally aged patina, the surface shows clear signs of ritual handling and authentic wear. The perforated rim indicates original attachment to a raffia costume, forming part of a larger ceremonial ensemble during performance.
Among the Yaka, such masks were associated with initiation contexts and community rituals, where they embodied powerful spiritual forces and played a central role in rites of passage. The exaggerated cranial volume and commanding expression were intentionally designed to impress, instruct and symbolically protect.
