Songye Kifwebe mask (female type) – DR Congo, early 20th century

Songye Kifwebe mask (female type) – DR Congo, early 20th century

Height: 85 cm

This monumental Kifwebe mask originates from the Songye people of the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. With its elongated vertical structure, refined sculptural planes and striking polychrome surface, the mask embodies the powerful aesthetic language of the Kifwebe tradition.

Carved from wood and painted in alternating bands of black, white and earthy brown pigments, the surface displays an aged patina and clear signs of ritual handling. The narrow slit eyes beneath raised lids, the central ridge running vertically along the face, and the distinctive cruciform mouth opening are characteristic features of female Kifwebe masks.

Among the Songye, Kifwebe masks were associated with the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe society and appeared during initiation ceremonies, social regulation rituals and community performances. Female examples are typically more harmonious and less aggressively carved than male counterparts, emphasizing balance and spiritual presence rather than intimidation.

The perforated rim and remaining raffia elements indicate its original integration into a full-body costume, transforming the wearer into a powerful ceremonial being during performance.
