Songye Kifwebe Mask – DR Congo, early 20th century

Songye Kifwebe Mask – DR Congo, early 20th century

Height: 73 cm

This authentic Songye Kifwebe mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo represents one of the most powerful sculptural traditions of Central African tribal art.

Carved in wood and retaining traces of original polychrome pigment, the mask is characterized by its high central crest, projecting horizontal brow elements, deeply carved facial planes, and tubular rectangular mouth with remnants of fiber attachment. The bold linear surface patterns and diagonal color accents are typical of Kifwebe masks and reflect their symbolic and ritual function.

Perforations along the lower rim once secured a full raffia costume, confirming its ceremonial use rather than decorative intent. Male Kifwebe masks are known for their dynamic, almost architectural abstraction and their association with initiation societies and social control rituals within Songye culture.

The surface shows a naturally developed patina, areas of pigment wear, and age-related abrasion consistent with early 20th-century ritual handling. This is not a later reproduction but a genuine ceremonial object.

A strong and expressive example of Songye sculpture with striking vertical presence.
