Songye Kifwebe helmet mask – DR Congo, mid 20th century
Songye Kifwebe helmet mask – DR Congo, mid 20th century
Height: 44 cm
This striking Kifwebe helmet mask originates from the Songye people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Characterized by its vertical central crest, narrow slit eyes and geometric rectangular mouth, the mask represents the male type associated with the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe society.
The softly muted palette of white, grey and earthy tones gives the piece a calm yet powerful presence. The continuous rim perforations indicate its original ritual attachment and performance use. The sculptural clarity and balanced proportions make this example particularly harmonious and display-worthy.
A solid mid-20th century example of Central African ritual art, combining sculptural strength with refined surface patina.
