Solongo Helmet mask – DR Congo/Northern Angola, early/mid 20th century
Height: 43 cm
This powerful helmet mask originates from the Solongo people of the southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo and northern Angola. Often referred to in the art market as “Solampasu,” this sculptural tradition is known for its compact, forceful forms and dramatic facial modeling.
The mask features a rounded cranial volume, pronounced cheeks, rectangular open mouth with visible teeth, and strong lateral ear projections. The dark, worn patina and preserved fiber headdress elements attest to ritual use and age. Its compact construction and expressive intensity create a striking presence that is both sculptural and ceremonial.
Solongo masks were associated with powerful ritual performances and social control functions. Today they are highly regarded by collectors of Central African art for their bold geometry and dynamic presence.
