Sandstone statue of sitting deity, Champa, Dong-Duong style – Khmer, 9th–10th century

Sandstone statue of sitting deity, Champa, Dong-Duong style – Khmer, 9th–10th century

Height: 52 cm

Sandstone, weathered, mineral remains of colour flaking off, soot stains (probably consequences of the bombings by the Americans in 1969 1n Vietnam).

In the 10th century, the Khmer Empire and the Champa Empire were the two most important powers on the Southeast Asian continent.

The Dai Viet in the north had only recently become a kingdom after a thousand-year existence as a province attached to Chinese territory.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, the Champa were subject to numerous attacks by their neighbours. Mainly due to their inferiority in weaponry, they were unable to assert themselves and the Champa Empire ceased to exist in 1832.
