Ritual headdresses – Congo region, mid 20th century (six pieces)

These headdresses sell per piece. Please let us know with your purchase, which piece you desire.

This group of ritual headdresses originates from the Congo region of Central Africa. Constructed from woven plant fiber and richly adorned with cowrie shells, seeds, and mounted bird beaks, these objects reflect the symbolic complexity of Central African ceremonial traditions.

The conical basketry structures are densely covered with natural materials that carry layered meanings: cowrie shells associated with wealth and vitality, seeds symbolizing fertility and regeneration, and bird beaks representing spiritual mediation between earthly and ancestral realms.

Such headdresses were worn in ritual, initiatory, or society-based contexts and were not intended for everyday use. The surfaces show authentic age, wear, and handling consistent with mid-20th century ceremonial production.
