Punu Mukudj mask – Gabon, early 20th century
Punu Mukudj mask – Gabon, early 20th century
Height: 37 cm (including raffia attachment)
This elegant wooden mask originates from the Punu people of Gabon and represents the classical Mukudj type, embodying ideals of female beauty and ancestral presence.
The softly modeled white kaolin face, closed almond-shaped eyes and delicate red scarification marks beneath the eyes convey serenity and spiritual refinement. The stylized coiffure rises above the forehead, while remnants of raffia around the base indicate its original integration into a full ceremonial costume.
Among the Punu, Mukudj masks appeared during dance performances honoring female ancestors and expressing moral and social harmony. The balanced proportions and aged surface patina suggest authentic ritual use.
