Punu Mukudj mask with animal crest, Punu/Lumbu people – Gabon, early 20th century

Punu Mukudj mask with animal crest, Punu/Lumbu people – Gabon, early 20th century

Height: 78 cm (including raffia attachment)

This authentic Punu Mukudj mask from Gabon represents one of the most iconic forms of Central African tribal art. Carved in wood and covered with white kaolin pigment, the mask embodies the Punu ideal of feminine beauty, spiritual purity, and ancestral presence.

Characteristic features include the softly modeled oval face, half-closed almond eyes, blue painted eyebrows, delicate facial scarification marks, and the high domed coiffure with finely carved geometric hair pattern. The voluminous raffia beard once formed part of a full masquerade costume, confirming its ceremonial function.

The sculpted animal crest — likely an antelope — mounted on the top enhances the mask’s symbolic authority and sculptural presence. Masks of this type were performed during initiation rites, funerary ceremonies, and community celebrations.

The surface shows natural wear, age-related abrasion in the kaolin layer, and a developed patina consistent with ritual use. This is not a later decorative carving but a genuine early 20th-century ceremonial mask.

A strong and collectible example of Punu sculpture from Gabon, combining refined facial carving with powerful vertical presence.
