Lega Bwami mask – DR Congo, early 20th century
Lega Bwami mask – DR Congo, early 20th century
Height: 46 cm
This expressive wooden mask originates from the Lega people of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and is associated with the Bwami society, an initiatory system central to Lega social and moral philosophy.
The elongated face, narrow slit eyes and prominent vertical nose reflect the refined abstraction characteristic of Lega carving traditions. Particularly striking are the remnants of polychrome decoration: red and white vertical markings beneath the eyes and geometric motifs across the lower half of the face. These painted elements once reinforced the mask’s symbolic meaning within the Bwami hierarchy.
The circular projection at the chin and the restrained mouth area emphasize the conceptual nature of Lega aesthetics, where moral and didactic values often outweighed naturalism. The perforated rim indicates attachment to fiber elements or costume components during ritual performances.
The surface shows authentic age and handling wear, with a deep, matte patina consistent with ceremonial use.
