Lega Bwami mask – DR Congo, mid 20th century
Lega Bwami mask – DR Congo, mid 20th century
Height: 64 cm (including raffia attachment)
This Lega mask originates from the Bwami initiation society of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Characterized by its elongated facial structure, small circular eyes, and restrained mouth opening, the mask embodies the refined abstraction typical of Lega ritual carving.
The white kaolin surface symbolizes purity and moral knowledge within the Bwami system. The remaining raffia fibers underline its performative context and ceremonial function.
Dating to the mid-20th century, the mask shows authentic wear and a naturally aged patina.
