Kuba Bwoom mask – DR Congo early 20th century

Kuba Bwoom mask – DR Congo early 20th century

Height: 34 cm

This finely carved wooden mask originates from the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and represents the Bwoom type, one of the important characters within Kuba royal masquerade traditions.

The rounded helmet-like form is combined with densely carved geometric surface patterns that animate the face with rhythmic structure. The pyramidal nose, narrow slit eyes and crosshatched cheek areas reflect the highly developed ornamental vocabulary characteristic of Kuba court art.

Traces of red pigment remain on the cheeks, while the perforated rim indicates attachment to a fiber costume during ceremonial performances. The aged patina and surface wear are consistent with traditional ritual use.
