Kete/Kuba plank mask – Southern Congo, mid 20th century

Kete/Kuba plank mask – Southern Congo, mid 20th century

Height: 33 cm

This Kete or Kuba plank mask originates from southern Congo and represents a classic flat board-mask type characteristic of the region. The rectangular structure, closed eyelids, and carefully incised geometric patterns create a restrained yet powerful visual presence.

The diamond motifs across the lower face and the rows of perforations along the rim indicate the former attachment of textile or fiber costume elements, confirming its performative use.

Dating to the mid-20th century, the mask displays an authentic aged surface and retains its strong graphic quality, making it a compelling example of Kete/Kuba carving tradition.
