Extremely rare three-footed Yaozhou celadon teapot with animal handle and relief decoration – China, Jin dynasty, 12th–13th century

Height: 22 cm

The jug, for which it is not easy to find a similarly beautiful, elegant and elaborately designed comparable piece, has a flat base and rests with its almost spherical body on three feet in the shape of animal legs with scales and claws. Its belly is adorned with a cut decoration resembling a brocade pattern. The jug is surmounted by a tall, parabolic bow handle, which, with its decoration, is reminiscent of a scaled snake or dragon's body
on which the small figure of a person sits facing the modelled dragon-headed spout. This probably refers to the head of the Eight Immortals, who is often depicted riding through the air on his serpent-dragon. He possesses the elixir of life. The jug served as a container for precious liquids.
