Double Calabash vase, Quianlong period – China, Qing dynasty, 18th century

Double Calabash vase, Quianlong period – China, Qing dynasty, 18th century

Height: 28 cm

On the lower body of the vessel, two large Tao-lieh float opposite one another above asymmetrically placed waves with foaming spray, depicted in a naturalistic manner as the main motifs, against a wide white surface, interspersed with small depictions of symbolically significant objects (quin (mouth organ), rhinoceroshom (magic bottles).

On the upper body of the vessel, two Tao-lieh masks are also found. Here, however, they are depicted upside down, alternating with the small, smoke-emitting magic bottles. The Tao-lieh on the two calabash bodies are depicted in almost equal size on surfaces of different sizes. This created interesting and exciting contrasts between blue and white, top and bottom. Porcelain, underglaze cobalt, transparent glaze.
