Cult bronze type fang ding – China, Western Zhou dynasty, 6th century BC

With feet in the shape of elephant heads and elephant trunks and surface design in the form of the Yunwen cloud pattern (spiral lines). A band with Phoenix decoration below the vessel opening. The zoomorphic decorations became abstract designs through strong simplification. The taotie (centre of the vessel walls) was the primary decoration at the beginning of the Zhou period.
