Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask – Angola/DR Congo, early 20th century

Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask – Angola/DR Congo, early 20th century

Height: 33 cm

This refined Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask represents the idealized image of feminine beauty and ancestral presence within Chokwe culture.

Carved in wood and crowned with a high, finely striated coiffure, the mask displays the classic aesthetic balance characteristic of early 20th-century Chokwe sculpture. The gently arched eyebrows, half-closed almond-shaped eyes, delicately modeled lips, and subtle scarification mark on the cheek embody grace, dignity, and composure. The cylindrical hairstyle with its geometric band reflects traditional coiffure forms worn by Chokwe women of status.

Mwana Pwo masks were performed by male dancers during initiation ceremonies, rites of passage, fertility celebrations, and important communal events. The masked performer embodied the spirit of a female ancestor, expressing ideals of moral integrity, fertility, harmony, and social continuity. Far from decorative objects, these masks functioned as active participants in ritual life.

The surface presents a deep, naturally developed brown patina with areas of ritual wear and softened edges consistent with ceremonial handling. The perforations along the rim and remnants of original fiber attachments confirm its use within a full costume ensemble. The carving quality, controlled proportions, and aged surface clearly distinguish this piece from later decorative or tourist-market examples.

A harmonious and authentic example of Chokwe artistry, combining sculptural refinement with strong ritual significance.
