Central African helmet mask, Songye/Luba region – DR Congo, early 20th century

Central African helmet mask, Songye/Luba region – DR Congo, early 20th century

Height: 37 cm

This powerful Central African helmet mask can be attributed to the Songye / Luba cultural region of the Democratic Republic of Congo and dates to the early 20th century.

Carved from wood, the mask is characterized by its compact, architectural form and strong geometric abstraction. The cylindrical projecting nose, crescent-shaped eye panels with drilled viewing apertures, and the structured relief mouth create a striking, almost proto-modernist presence. The perforated rim along the lower edge indicates attachment to a fiber or textile costume, confirming its ceremonial function.

The surface shows a deep, naturally developed patina with mineral accretions, areas of wear, and age-related traces consistent with ritual use. The object is not a later tourist production but an authentic example of early 20th-century Central African ritual sculpture.

A rare and sculpturally compelling example of Congolese helmet mask tradition.
