Canoe shield from the Frieda river, Iniok village – New Guinea, 19th/20th century

Painted wood, palm leaf sheath and fiber

The canoe protects the canoe’s crew in both, practical and symbolic manner. Placed directly behind the crocodile headed prow carving of the great war canoe, the shields wide-spread wings are decorated with leaves and feather-spays. This creates a large screen behind which the warriors can find magical and physical protection.
