Sandstone figure of Skanda (KaritikeyAa); Thap Mam style – Vietnam, late 11th century
Sandstone figure of Skanda (KaritikeyAa); Thap Mam style – Vietnam, late 11th century
Height: 90 cm
Standing at right angles, on a double lotus base formed almost at right angles at the front with very stylised petals, which are offset opposite each other in double rows,
the figure of Skanda, the god of war, stands in an upright position on a “vehicle” (vahana), the peacock, to which he is entitled. The bird can be recognised if one imagines its lost head and also adds the clipped plumage (of the silhouette). Skanda holds the elongated neck of the peacock in his hands, its head protruding above.
Unlike the other gods of Brahmanism, he wears boots, a warrior. The superstructure on his head is probably a helmet, with a front, diadem-like section that has a crown of pearls on the forehead. Heavy, three-tiered earrings and an articulated pectoral complete the jewellery of the otherwise simple appearance.
