Limestone stele depicting Buddha with two accompanying Bodhisattvas – China, Nothern Wei dynasty, 5th century
Height: 104 cm
Width: 60 cm
The contour of the stone relief stele is characterised by the traditional form of a mandorla in early Chinese Buddhist art, including that of the Wei dynasties, which, like a tall, thin leaf with an upper tip bent forwards, forms the flat, (often flaming) background for sculpturally depicted figures and sacred figure scenes taken from the sutra texts.
The depiction on the front shows a central, larger Buddha figure standing on a lotus blossom pedestal with a sculpted double lotus nimbus.
It is flanked by two smaller bodhisattvas. These each stand on a lateral lotus blossom and have lotiform head nimbuses. Hovering above the three figures in a symmetrical arrangement are celestial beings with an ambrosia bottle carried upwards in the centre.
The sculpture seems unfinished.
