Buddha head, Limestone with remnants of gilding – China, Wei dynasty, 6th century

Buddha head, Limestone with remnants of gilding – China, Wei dynasty, 6th century

Height: 25 cm

The beautiful Buddha head stands out with its mildly smiling, roundish face, in which the ridges of the mouth, bridge of the nose and widely curved eyebrows determine the expression of the facial features.

The eyes with their upper eyelids are slightly slanted and sweep out in a slight curve towards the temples. The auricles have been treated summarily by the sculptor, as have the smooth humps of the locks of hair arranged in rows. The usnisa is clearly emphasised and set off from the skull. The back of the head suggests that the entire figure stood in front of a stele wall or large mandorla.

The dark, grainy stone has a white coating as a primer in almost all areas and an additional layer of paper pulp reinforced with coarse fibres. This primer bears the remains of the pigment layer to which gold residues adhere.
