Bodhisattva statue, limestone – China, Nothern Sui dynasty, 6th–7th century
Height: 85 cm
The pillar-like sculpted bodhisattva figure is to be understood as an acolyte from a Buddha triad. Her strikingly high, streaked mop of hair is encircled by a diadem with long ribbons falling over her shoulders.
Her robe, which covers her from the neck downwards, is sparsely folded and summarily indicated by notches. It shows the usual meandering folds at the hem above the feet. This garment is complemented by a shawl wrapped around the shoulders, the ends of which fall to the ground.
In contrast to the tiara bands at the sides of the neck, the sculptor has, presumably to enhance the sculptural effect, the figure's left arm and the parts of the scarf running at hip height on both sides.
The figure stands on a narrow lotus calyx, the long petals of which fall down over the conical, cubic, angular base.
